Just for the avoidance of doubt, the image doing the rounds on here and FB, of Meeke allegedly in a ditch on today’s test with Toyota, is fake news

---------

at French forum they wrote that the windscreen at this photo vs the videos is changed.Of course windscreens dont change only after rolls.

So who crashed the Yaris then, if Meeke doing that is fake news?

There`s something funny about these videos and images. That prestine-looking Yaris doesn`t have an "All live" sticker and has Finnish plates in videos, whereas some videos show a test car with Estonian SP plates and an "all live" sticker. Official news also shows Meeke sitting in a car with all live stickers. https://toyotagazooracing.com/release/2018/wrc/1017-01.html

E: Just checked again, can`t find the video or maybe i was seeing stuff ( license plates thing), but the all live sticker was clearly there in some cases, which could be just as simple as changing a windscreen for some other reason.

That's my take as well. If if was fake they could have tweeted a denial hours ago.

Remember how Mikkelsen rolled i20 last year on test before Portugal (when he didn't have any contract) and it was completely quiet from both him and Hyundai.

The official press kit had pictures of Meeke driving the Yaris with the All Live sticker on windscreen. I presume those were taken yesterday or some days before, which is also when the crash happened with the All Live sticker. In the crash the windscreen got broken, and was changed into a windscreen without All Live sticker, and this is the car Meeke drove today.

I think the team has asked for the rally enthusiasts watching the test not to say anything about the crash, but the tractor driver hasn't heard of this and uploaded the picture casually to facebook or something, where someone has found it and put it circulating.

The "number" has extremely similar shape to the rollcage (most of it). Also can you find a rally where Yaris had nr. 17 on and rolled? (and the rally was in autumn) Why would you put number on in testing?

Yes after studying the picture I too think it is probably the roll cage visible through the window. Also, Toyota race numbers are orange, what looks like 17 is white or silver.

LOL Toyota has become the Area 51 of rallying. Unless they only had like 3 guys watching the tests, I'm pretty sure more info would leak in the next few days if Kris really crashed the car. It would be difficult to prevent such news.

Mikkelsen rolled the I20 on the Portugal test in 2017 and no picture or vid ever came out, neither was there any confirmation from any of the parties involved.

Here we have
- picture of a rolled car where the stickers match those used on the test and the autumn leafs match those on other pictures from the test
- pictures of a car with different windscreen and damaged roof afterwards
- silence from Toyota and Meeke about the picture being "fake"

So Occam's razor.... which explanation is more likely
a) He rolled and they don't want any publicity around it
b) Someone created a very good fake picture that fits + Toyota changed the stickers/windscreen from one day to next + Toyota for some reason damaged the roof of the car going into the next day

There's nothing wrong about it, and hardly someone is surprised. The real question is "why Toyota is trying to hide it?". They surely know his crashing abilities, so why did they even engaged him, be it even for 1 year?

Honestly, the problem is not even Toyota supposedly trying to hide it (that’s a common and understandable procedure when these things happen), it’s more the way people in the social media are eagerly saying Amen to the fake photo allegation, promptly accusing those who do believe it’s not fake of being Meeke haters…

Hello, Meeke fan here. I actually don't believe it is fake.
Having looked at the photos, there clearly is damage on the roof of the car, across the centre probably above the roll cage where the dents can't easily be knocked out. Also looks like a little damage on the drivers side a pillar.
I disagree about the windscreen being replaced though, looks to me like the top section where allive sticker is has just been covered with black duct tape.

Thing is no Toyota has ever ran the number 17 if i remember correctly.

It seems that several people confused seeing the rollcage through the window with a number "17" being on the window.
There is no number on the window. There is no "17" anywhere on the car.

It certainly looks like he had a light roll, or partial roll, and the team are keeping this quiet.

That doesn't explain the damage on the car seen in testing yesterday.
At the end of the day, it just looks like a light roll. Kris exploring the limits in a car that is new to him, better he gets it out of his system before the season starts!
Just very unfortunate it looks like it's happened now so early on in his Toyota adventure.

Agreed. The cars definitely suffered damage between the two days and on the roof too. Looks like nothing on the scale of things and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been told to go as hard as he wants to understand the car.... ok, a roll isn’t ideal, but it doesn’t look like it’s affected much.

Yes the only interesting thing about it is how aggressive some Meeke-fanboys are about the whole story (just read the first response C Clark got).
It's completely normal to have small crashes in testing and normally almost nobody hears about it unless it's massive (like Ogier before Finland 2017)

The surface has to be repaired indeed. The wetter it gets, the more the roads get destroyed. That's also why Wales Rally GB has such huge repair costs (a few years ago it's continuation was in danger because of that). I think even after a proper test with one WRC car, some repairs need to be done.

Of course, and this is also a "reward" for a private road owner to allow testing or rallying, often the road is in better shape after repairs than it was before rally cars, and all for free.

This particular road Meeke used today is very often used for tests and it shows in its condition. I think this was maybe 6th or 7th time this year only for Toyota and some other smaller teams have used it too. A year ago it was driven as a stage in national event. It's much used and well known, but it still caughts victims every now and then...

It's probably just a quick way for them to test the car with more rear downforce, and if it is better they can set about making the parts correctly to fit the rules.

does not bode well... if lack of downforce is the complaint, its a MAJOR wind tunnel job generate that amount of downforce within the rules.

At the photos of greek magazine 4T i believe that i saw an updated new-aero rear bumper. Different to that from Finland, Deutschland.

The sides were not painted, only pure carbon, and at the bottom of the sides they had cut them to the inside.

Please find the photos at the end of the following link-article.

I think that the updated version of the new aero, which is more compact at the bottom of the sides, tested in Greece too at the end of August.
Still uglier than the initial rear aero of the car but much better looking than the first version of the new aero. But this is just my opinion.

Dunno why folk care much about testing crashes. All the best drivers have had testing crashes, some more severe than other like Ogier in Finland or Neuville in Corsica(?). Meeke, Mikkelsen and Jari all had newsworthy ones as well now, and two of those were on the first time a driver drove the car in anger. Testing is all about finding the limits, seeing what works and doesn't etc. Hardly a big deal

Toyota had an issue with faulty rim in Catalunya this year, Tanaks puncture on early saturday was caused by a defective rim (not wet tyre sidewall vulnerability). Lappi had a lot of weird punctures in argentina.
makes sense to try different rims.

Hi everyone,

I’m writing this from Lyon as I head back home after our first proper pre-rally test with the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRC team. I’ve had a couple of days up in the mountains, getting to know my Yaris WRC ahead of the Rallye Monte Carlo that starts the 2019 season and also, of course, getting to know my new co-driver Seb Marshall at the same time.

It’s been a great couple of days, I have to say. Yesterday was pretty much bone dry – not exactly typical Monte Carlo weather, you’d have to say, but perfect for allowing me to find out more about the Yaris. Don’t forget that before yesterday, I hadn’t driven the car on asphalt before – so the fact that the conditions were dry and predictable was really useful for me. It also helped that I knew the stretch of road pretty well too.

Having racked up the miles yesterday, we left the test site hoping that a bit of more changeable weather would come in overnight and give us more typical Monte roads for the second day of the test. And sure enough, we arrived this morning to find that there’d been freezing rain and there were five and a half kilometres of sheet black ice up and over a col. Tricky, but perfect!

The ice melted throghout the day so the conditions evolved; there was a fair bit of mud by the end of our running, in fact, so it was really slippery, with lots of differing levels of grip. Again, that’s what you’re after when you’re preparing for Monte. We got pretty much everything you could expect from that rally over the two days, in fact – except pure full-on snow.

So I’m pleased with how it went. And that goes for my first two days working with Seb too. We got on really well, so it was a good start. The team was functioning really nicely too, and I feel comfortable in the car.

I couldn’t ask for any more, to be honest. Now we get a chance to switch off a bit over the Christmas break – making sure we switch back on againnice and early in the New Year to be ready for Monte!

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous 2019. And to thank you, as always, for your support. 2018 was a bit of a rollercoaster ride but I’ve been really touched by the support on here, and we’ve ended the year in a good place and looking forward to a new season, with a new team and a new car. I can’t wait.

Regards,

Kris

yesterday it was perfect in my eyes, very fast ,with precise drive. But at dry asphalt the c3 and Ogier driving, couldnt be different.
At wet we saw the nervous rear oversteering at exits from slow corners,as at some braking where c3 lost grip at rear suddenly.
Probably they have a lotof work to do.
But the game will be played at gravel.I am very curious to listen Ogiers comments, after first stages at Mexico.
