It wont be that dry, like in the Meeke video. Even if its not actually raining the Welsh roads will be pretty damp and muddy after the first cars.

"The verdict? Simple. M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta WRC looked like an all-conquering force; Hyundai’s i20 Coupe WRC exited most corners looking like a beached fish trying to fight its way back into the water."

“His car broke down. I can’t see that Nerve-vile bloke getting very far.” <- this is pure gold :D :D

Clearly M-Sport should be good on their home rally with unlimited testing on similar surface, but David Evans writing article that predicts Rally GB performance based on what a tractor driver said and watching 2 passes in testing..... ok.

I did and that's why I said it wont be dry like that (France) in Wales.

I cant understand when the C3 has problems on gravel why they aren't testing in the country where the next rally is. They could make some progress on that dusty French gravel but then be all at sea again on the slimy Welsh stuff...

Matton did say its very expensive to test in Wales though ! ;)

I know this isn't really going to tell them what their car will be like in the mud on WRGB, but I happen to think the overall handling balance of the car looks way better than in previous tests. The rear end looks way more secure. Of course the specific circumstances of the test conditions are unknown to me, but from the short clips it looks better.

Looks like the info about Kalle hooking up with Skoda is true. Will be interesting to check the tyres he's on during that test.

It's interesting because I'm sure I read one of the things they wanted for Kalle was the ability to sample WRC machinery in testing - hence why M-Sport and Hyundai were supposedly the main options.

but that can be misleading too.Well yeah... We just need to remember last season when everyone thought Citroen would be the strong team. Look how well that turned out.

We can probably make a better assessment this year because the teams will develop what they have and we have a fair idea what they are starting from.

I don't think Citroen will improve much for instance and even if they sort out their issues and become competitive they don't have any quick consistent drivers.

Toyota has a strong line up but questionable pace on some events. Have a chance if they can get their car more reliable.

Msport will likely have the most reliable car also next year but I can't help but wonder if they can keep up with development.

Hyundai is the favorite if they can sort out their reliability. They have the strongest budget, driver line up and quickest car (and I don't expect that to change). They have no excuses next year.

...but i might be 100 percent wrong. That's the fun bit about a new season. So many unknown factors.

About Citroen. I don't think it's quite true, because C3 actually was fast car out of the box, but it had, as Matton expressed, "limited operating window" issue.
So going back to testing videos, I think you can judge speed from a video, it's just that you see it on this specific road/conditions, but it doesn't mean the same will be on a rally stage.

I was just thinking on RBs youtube there is a video of Ogier testing and interviews in Finland. They were using the plain white testcar there. Maybe they wanna do a preaseason video with Ogier and Evans and have the car dressed more nicely for the purpose.

Seems like the Ford test must be Evans since this article says Ogier will test on the 13th and 14th. Furthermore, Ogier is quoted of saying that they are working on getting the handling more to his liking which means making the car edgier and reacting more drastically to inputs. According to him Evans also appreciates that sort of characteristic. He says that he doesn't know anything about the rumours that there will be a major upgrade in March but that he would of course welcome it. I think he is just keeping the cards close to his chest on that last note.

Does anyone know how long M-Sport will test in Monaco for? One would imagine the ominous third driver could do with some practice as well.

They don't do only one day of testing. Usually they try to test all possible scenarios.

By the way that's why sometimes the test footage from RMC looks insanely slow - at a moment they might test an "all is wrong" scenario such as slicks on snow.

"A golden opportunity with the C3 WRC"
December 14, 2017

The practice sessions are always a source of surprises for both the teams and the spectators. This week in the Hautes-Alpes, Alexandre Coria, co-pilot since 2015, had the incredible opportunity to climb alongside Kris Meeke in the C3 WRC for a test session.

Arrived as a spectator in the early morning with a friend, Alexander quickly learned the unavailability of Paul Nagle, usual copilot of Kris Meeke, blocked in London because of inclement weather. Asked by Sandrine Carminati, responsible for closing the roads on these tests, the name of Alexander was quickly mentioned in the Citroën clan.
Former participant in the JWRC alongside Vincent Dubert, Alexandre had already been able to rub shoulders with the Citroën Racing family and the green light was given to him around 13h after some formalities.
"Before starting the first runs, the team explained the operation of some buttons in case of problems. My role in the afternoon was to accompany Kris on every run to have an identical performance base throughout the day. Although he did not need any notes because he knew the base very well, we had some technical exchanges, especially about tires and conditions.
If the conditions were very wet, we still had a feeling of Monte Carlo with very cool temperatures and fog at the end of the day. We were able to ride with all the tires offered by Michelin.
Kris is a frankly very approachable and friendly guy, I quickly became confident with him. I quickly understood why he was one of the fastest drivers in the championship. Regarding the car, I was really impressed by the efficiency of the chassis, it seems that there is no limit, the car seems very bright to what I knew ( the R5 in particular). As for the impression of power and brakes, it was less impressive than the chassis, but it was still magical. In the end, we made about fifteen runs and more than 80 kilometers. It was really a fantastic and unforgettable day. Alexander told us after this day.
Descended from this Citroen C3 WRC after a dreamy afternoon, Alexandre will find more usual cars in 2018 with a program in France.

Tänak: "Monte test was in difficult conditions, it was hard to understand the car. Those conditions didnt give me whole picture about the car and if you look at it, the technical solutions are little bit different: active diffs, mechanical diffs and geometry. The car is built with different perspective in mind which isnt bad, it is positive but the car is handling differently and we have to test more to understand how i exactly have to drive it. But in general the first impression is positive, it is not a difficult car to drive"

First of all normally it takes around two years before patent application is granted and published which is way too long for motorsport. And then from my experience in automotive R&D the large companies don't pay for most of the patents. They use them as a lever on another patent holders so that in the end they trade using patents without actually paying something. The downside of that is that they tend to patent nearly everything with very vague description...

Ironically I'm an patent attorney registered to practice in both AUS and US. A few years ago, yes it would take a year or longer to get a patent filed. It all depends on the entity who is filing the patent. Small entities (solo inventors) do not get any priority. Some of the firms in the US actually are close to the patent examiners in DC so I have seen design patents get filed in less than one year.

The new rules for the USPTO and PCT now have a "first to file application" which basically gives rights to the first person to file their invention. In this case if Toyota were to file a patent on their mirror they would have rights to their design even if it is copied a few months after. It probably is not worth it, but it was such a novel design I can see all the other teams copying their idea. Who knows, you might see this for hyper cars too...

I've actually filed several patents for powersport companies such as Ohlins (motorcross applications) and a few US powersport companies. You would be surprised how tech is copied from motorsport and applied to everyday use. Ohlins and Custom Cages have filed a few utility patents on motorsport applications which were later copied by competitors. They didn't earn millions, but it was a decent amount.

Ford of USA, BMW and VWAG are good examples of companies who file patents galore. You can see some of their crazy filings by doing a search using google patents.

Is it worth it for Toyota... probably not, but it was a cool design for sure. I agree not all motorsport ideas are worth protecting, but the good ones are.

I personnaly do not see it novel at all, for example comparing it to the F1 car mirrors, i.e. using the mirror stays for air flow management.

If I am not mistaken this is sound of blow-off valve, i.e. the valve which opens when the throttle valve is closed and when the turbo presses the air against the wall (and by that it would normally slow down/stop itself creating a massive lag).

That is awesome! Congrats and best of luck. I think thr European system is a lot better than the US system.

You’re on the right end of the stick for sure. I’ve written many applications but never been listed as an inventor even when helping clients with design. I’ll hopefully file a few patents of my own in the near future.

A design patent in conjunction with a utility patent is the best IMO. For design patents it’s all about the design of the object. Drawings are key in this case. You can make several versions of the design and some very simplified drawings to cover every aspect of the design. This prevents any copies which are similar. When we used to file designs for an eye wear company we would file 6-8 different versions of their sunglass designs. This was the only way they could fight against sneaky counterfeiters who would slightly change the design hoping they could get around the patent. Didn’t work! Mainly because they had a strong design patent and a strong legal team :). That being said any monkey can file a patent. Protecting it is where money comes in. If you’re a large entity nobody will mess with you...

If you look at the Hyundai mirror from ten feet away and then look at the Toyota you see no difference. Toyota could have easily prevented Hyundai from copying their mirror design with a good design patent which includes several embodiments. The utility patent might be able to protect th function, but we all know the function is not novel unless Toyota has something others don’t. In the end it’s probably not worth it, but a good design patent would cost 5k and might force Hyundai to choose a completely different design.... but I’m sure Toyota could care less as mirrors do not win races.

I just though it was a unique design and to see Hyundai doing the same is kind of funny to me...

Anyways let’s move this to another thread since this about tests and I don’t want to ruin this great thread with boring ass patent talk.

I can appreciate your professional background and therefore you could be looking at the "Toyota" mirrors from a certain perspective. But keep in mind that this style of mirror was run on DTM cars long before WRC 2017. And by next year all GT cars would have the same. So by far it's not a unique design by anyone. We did do a CFD study of this design before 2017 but thought it was pushing the rules a bit too much; Toyota went ahead with it and was allowed to run with a small modification by removing the slot, as I understand. They did it again (pushing the rules) for the 2018 front end, and I say well done to them.

It does bring an interesting point about patents in motorsport. I think the main problem is, no matter how fast the process, by the time something is protected by the patent, it's already yesterday's news. Also, could one really justify the novelty of a winglet or some aero device because it pushes the air a bit this way rather than that way...? I hope not. I do believe Renault or McLaren patented their inerter design a while ago; Nick can you comment?

One thing to keep in mind about all these "aero developments" in WRC is that, by the time you put a hatchback shape in the wind tunnel/CFD and run a thousand iterations, you would find there are really only one or two optimum ways to deal with the air. Give it a few more updates and all the cars will look exactly the same! Convergence baby!

racerx1979
23rd December 2017, 21:04
I’m definitely looking at this from a biased perspective and also agree with your thoughts. I did notice similar designs for DTM and F1 cars. It’s nice to see companies like Toyota taking the leap in aero for rally cars and seeing others follow suite.

Thank you for your response!

It's seems to me that they have some kind of plaques blocking the sides of the radiator colling, because I read that they are tunnels for brake colling. Maybe not usefull in this conditions, since you cannot cool the brakes to much.~
