Depends on how you put it. Judging speed from test videos is pretty hard.

That said "too loose at the rear" and "no grip on the rear" is what Hyundai drivers (esp. Sordo) are most often complaining about, while Ford drivers always complain about turn-in.

JML '17 Polo vs Paddon '17 i20 - the Polo looks less taily - is this due to JML's driving style, polo's transmission? so looks quicker in places. Looks like the road is more moist for the Polo test and the Polo's tyres are gripping better. Polo changes direction better in places too - steering/ suspension etc.
Paddon looks to lose microseconds with the taily i20 getting the outside back wheel in deeper gravel and taking longer to get back straight on the line again. Don't think he will be on the top step of the finland podium.

Well I'm not an expert on test vid analysis and over-analyzing 2-3 test passes often doesn't do much good. But at 0:29 he does the scand. flick on purpose to make it turn in and throws the rear-first. Exactly what he was complaining about on Sardinia. Should be totally unecessary if the diff. is working/set-up right no?

Also there seems to be some oversteer at the end of the turns, more often than for example on tanak test vid. It's often hard to see what the front wheels are doing but the one at 0:23 doesn't seem to be caused by steering input or road.

Well they are supposed to test for 4 days..

Maybe it's just me, but I've seen a ton of testing vids and the cars/drivers seem to be getting quicker. Albeit a lot of the tests are carried out in Finland where the speeds are higher, but I also think driver confidence has also increased along with better developed cars. Keep the posts coming!

Because in Poland AFAIK most of gravel roads are in Rally Poland area, and some in Gdansk area, where was 2nd Poland rally championship event. Most of the roads in Poland are tarmac, and also most of events are on tarmac. I think there is a rule not to test in rally area before event, so actually tests in neighbour countries is one of the best and wise moves.

The Rally Championship of Poland is mostly played on asphalt but takes place in the midst of Poland due to the mountainous terrain (ERC in Rally Rzeszów). To do this Rally Poland is played completely different than ever before - just look at the map from 2009 - Tors, Wydminy, Paprotki, Miłki - so finding the right road for the rally test, 40km from the rally database is no problem.

Challenge is that in Poland there is a number of roads that is designated test roads, and most of these gets very, very rutted. So difficult to get rally conditions.
Rally Poland changes conditions from sandy field tracks to harder gravel roads.

So basically Samsonas Rally (same crew from 300 Lakes rally) organizers crew suggest Hyundai to come and test in Lithuania, they filmed 4 stages, Hyundai guys watched it and try to find most similar to Poland roads - all was suitable, they choose 3 of them and did testing. it was required hard surface roads, and service zone near stage. Also everyone in team has their own food wishes, so test organizer should supply required meal.

And it's very sad that everyone still remember those disaster stages in Lithuania from Rally Poland - Hyundai's first question was - Is they are same guys that responsible for those stages in Lithuania...Hope someday Lithuania get 2nd chance, because we have good stages also :)

The cars probably are going faster in the test vid's as the driver's are repeating the same stage and know it really well and so are more committed.

But this is the same for every test isn't it? They always test on the same set of roads. I just feel that overall speed seems faster, but it could be the tests were in Finland which makes sense.

it also depends on springs you use and damper clicks, so it can be different from car to car, even from the same team.

According to the rules, manus are allowed to choose each year just one permanent site where they can test without limitations ( http://www.fia.com/2017-wrc-sporting-regulations-and-appendices-english-28062017 Page 51 of the pdf). Since 2017, that site doesn’t need to be located at the team’s registry country anymore but, most likely, all manus still using a site close to their bases.



Toyota can test unlimited within Jyväskylä city limits.

Besides Jyvaskyla for Toyota, any ideas of the other manus permanent test site locations?
