They are talking that the Hyundai is looking fast and they like the car. Huyndai have worked on the differential setups, the guy with Martini racing hat is saying that for him Citroen is the fastest for the moment, Hyundai is looking also very good and if Ford is also fast it would be very interesting.

Agreed. I believe that the 'next' roadgoing Yaris, for the EU at least, will be a heavily revised version of the existing platform.

i.e. 'new' Avensis has different sheet metal and dashboard, but actually dates back to 2009.

Thus, the Toyota WRC car was built upon the current spec road car, but now they seem to be adding new panels from the next road car, due to be launched soon/early 2017.

And here it is, the new road-going Yaris, based on the existing Yaris.

Not really, hot hatches are kind of promotion for a car model but they are rarely profitable. Anyway the others at least look good. This car looks like a something from a village tuning party.

Rarely profitable or not, there is a wait list of 5 plus months for a Focus RS and several weeks for a 308 GTI. Sorry of the OT.

Mirek
12th January 2017, 20:30
So is for plenty of totally uniform cars. You have to see that the numbers of sold hot hatches are very small while the expenses for their existence are rather high. It's the common models which make money while the hot hatches make the promotion.

I don't work in automotive sphere, but here I feel duty to express engineering pov. Rear wing is meant to generate downforce, stability... it is its purpose. It is not meant to be married or even just desired. So its form is defined by certain phisical characteristics of airflow and not "being atractive". If I find an analogy in nature it is like comparing an owl and a rose... one is aerodinamic the other beautifull in its purpose.

That's right. But as a marketing tool wrc except the obvious gain being the fastest, there is also pure car attraction side, well probably much less but still.

I am fully aware of this... It is about managing air flow and creating as much leverage on the rear wheels as possible.

Still doesn't make it pretty though. I liked the first iteration of their rear wing... This, however, not so much.

... Also owls are majestic creatures. The Toyota is not.

Yes it is ugly, but designed to work in conjunction from the front wings back. Since shots of Ogier testing the Yaris, it is evident that the door skins have been widened, and sculpted similar to an 80's testerossa, flat at the top which leads from top of front wing, the aero door mirror arms, along this top edge of door skin and rear quarter panel to the bottom of the rear wing.

The car does seem to look stable at speed on Tarmac straights.

Hmm, I think that the few moments where there is understeering are down to icy or very slippery road taken with a considerably higher than safe apex speed.

Eeh-eh, let me try - because oversteering in very-very slippery conditions is very-very bad. Kind of the enemy of your enemy is my friend.

Probably Lundefaret can make much more educated analysis (and possibly prove me wrong).

Mirek
13th January 2017, 23:48
Let's take it different way. Both oversteering and understeering are negative behavior. It's not like there are only two options, the good one is neither one of them. Understeering is for sure the safer bad thing as it is easier to predict especially for amateurs and it also secures better way of crashing (by front) but I somehow doubt that the general rule applies also for WRC drivers.

Anyway on ice with short studs or without studs at all I think that every 4x4 car sufferes from some understeering at the apex and oversteering at the exit simply because of very low level of grip (I admit that my only experience with studs on ice is from go-karts but with them the behavior was exactly like that - understeering at the apex becoming oversteering at the exit).

IMHO the oversteering on the exit on these conditions happens just because the rear wheels are on the worse side of the road, that's why I think car tend to understeer can be better in such, giving the car maximum drip at the exit. Otherwise of course none of underseer & oversteer is a good thing, but I agree understeering is "safer".

I would like to see the Fiesta on dry asphalt, always hard to tell with all the cars on different roads but there's something I don't find too convincing about it at the moment, maybe chassis too stiff?

Looking at this video, especially the first part the "body language" of the Ford looks good. I think potentially the Ford, Citroen and Hyundai will be close. Surely some will have advantages and disadvantages in certain conditions but to my "amateur" eye they are all looking good. Even more hyped for this season :D The only problem is one "thing" in the WRC is still in a higher class than the rest, hopefully someone can "level up" ;)

We are all hyped but realistically everyone will be cautious with setup and driving in the first 4-5 rounds. The real action should begin in 2018 when they spend their first homologation jokers.

I'm sure some teams see opportunity in this situation, and will not be so cautious. Based on the past, and from other motor-sport projects, Toyota will be all in from the beginning.

Are you serious? What's the point of being "cautious" (really a strange word to use in Rallysport) for so long? They'll go flat out from day 1. If some, possibily Citroen, will show some advantage, the others will try to fight back the next event, not the next season...

after all the testing, and new regs, cars etc. they will have a point to prove of who is quickest, best set up and so on. no way will they be holding back and why should they, they will be at 10/tenths!!

RS
17th January 2017, 13:53
Unless we get some dry monte stages where they all choose the same tyres we're probably not going to be able to tell much about car performance this weekend.

I'm personally much more excited for the start of this WRC season than previous ones. New car regs, some big driver changes and a new team joining, plus previously dominant VW leaving should all shake things up nicely.

youtube does not limit the fps man.... if something is shot at 60fps youtube does not cut down the extra fps, it will show 60fps even if you put it at 30.

Franky
5th February 2017, 10:45
Now, first of all let's get the frame rates correct. In majority of the world videos are shot at 25, 50, 100, etc fps. In the Americas videos are 30, 60, 120, etc fps (actually they are a little less than those numbers).

And Youtube does convert/re-encode the videos. High frame rates are supported only with resolutions that are at least 1280x720. Everything that is below that is converted to non-high frame rate video, if the uploaded file is a high fps video.

For me uploading high fps videos is a bit puzzling. Essentially high frame rates are for slow motion. Human brain can't even register every single frame when watching 25fps video.

dimviii

For this moment - I can't. I will try to find some reference points and calculate actual driving time, if I can find it

And yep, speed-up video doing on purpose, youtube re-encode or low/hi fps doesn't speed-up video.

With snow vid's it difficult to see, but on this one https://youtu.be/9bKgYnuP1-g?t=3m32s clearly see - video is speed-up.

Yeah, looked a bit speeded. What I can´t understand is how sound still can be so realistic.

Who crashes before the rally is safe during it. Like JML in Monte. With some guys you always expect it to happen, so better now than later.

its not realistic, but is harder to understand the speed-up sound compared to speed up vision.Thats why I mentioned at previous post faster gear changes and different blow off whistle sounds.
They are not all videos speed up,even not speed up at same speed.Bunnings video from KKS post is way faster than Breens one, dont tell me that t this video also you cant recognise the faster playing rhythm?

Really disappointed with you Swedish guys once again....you missed fast guys like Ogier, Tänak and Neuville but filmed slow guys :p

A very easy why.....
All of them tested in Östersund-area, around 600 km !! north from the rallyarea. Not so much people there who are following the test as we do here =)

So a other good day for me..
We started in Anttilla, around 40 km north of Torsby watching Tidemand and Veiby test. Good speed with R5-cars !
Lot of snow there, around 25-40 cm in terrain and at least 10 cm of fresh snow from the night. Should be good for the norther stages.

Then of to Meeke test. Very spectacular driving by him and went very very wide everywhere.
Also here around 5 cm fresh snow from the night, and this was south of servicepark.

My video from Meeke test here.

I don´t really understand why. I can maybe understand when they doing December-test, because winter are much earlier there than here. But why now, one week before the rally ??

Much better to test on the roads who have similar character and same conditions.

Greg what I am seeing is not normal speed.I don't care what is the reason, the speed I watch is NOT normal.
Watch the 2 videos from Breen tests. The second one is at normal speed, and if I am not wrong there are common corners between these 2 videos.

Can your educated eye tell if 2017 videos are faster the ones from 2016? And by how much, 1sec per minute or perhaps even more? Or do we need to wait until Mexico or even Portugal to find out?

Citroen's test C3 WRC had already been in the wars after Meeke's team-mate Craig Breen dropped it the day before, damaging a rear quarter.

I have made that conclusion given his recent form.

He started last year brilliantly with only some rocks taking out the suspension twice hampering progress but still, he was consistent and fast. Portugal and Finland proved that.

After that he started making mistakes again and now he does them regularly :(

Like someone said back in 2015, it gives you a lot of gray hairs being a fan of Meeke.

"I ran a little bit wide, dropped into a ditch and rolled. That's it.

"Otherwise, the day had gone well and we'd made good progress.

"I'm happy with the running we did and with our preparations for the event.

"If it had have happened earlier in the day, we'd have been back on our wheels and running in no time.

"This is why we go testing, these things can happen."

No biggy then.. ;)

He got a pressure on his shoulders, he a leading driver of WRTeam, in this case he try too much and overrun limit too often, but pre-event tests done special for that to find a grip level and find a own "red line". Small off in pre-event test it's normal. And better it was happen before the rally.

Toyota can drive as much as they want in Jyväskylä area of central Finnland. Other places in Europe they can test 55days/year.

I think testing possibility in Finnland is advantage for team

So where are the other team permitted to test as much as they like? Seems a bit odd considering testing limitations were made for cost cutting purposes.
