Some friends were there and they were astonished by the speed of the car.
Can't wait to Monte where I will be able to watch them live. I think maybe our previous fears about having rather boring cars were a bit exagerrated.

The fears were mainly raised by some rally journos in need to get readers attention. 2017 is going to be a fantastic revamp year for WRC, and we all should be excited for.

Mirek

R-GT. You can't make anything else from a roadster as all other classes require 4-seater as a homologation model.

Besides that I think it's 1.8 Turbo which is too much for R3.

Somehow don't know what to think about it. The sound is quite boring and the overal appearance is too stockish for me. I know it's no 911 brutal power but rather a small nimble car but still it doesn't look that attractive (not speaking about the look of the car itself). Let's see how they progress.

To be honest, that car is far from being competitive and personally I really don't care about this project. It's an RGT spec which I don't like.
Anyway the car has a 1800 and is 300bhp but I think this one is not true.

Interesting news in MN today about VW. According to FXD they tested the definitive 2017 spec Polo somewhere 'close to Finland'.

They have been testing there for the last two weeks with a car that looks very visually different to the car we've seen testing to date. They are thrilled no pictures surfaced, although they suspect spies from Toyota were in attendance.

Apparently the front bumper is completely different. With a bigger rear bumper and different diffuser. Front and rear fenders have changed. Sounds like the rears have air intakes like we've seen on the Toyota. Also new bonnet and wider doors. Plus a bigger rear wing with more overhang.

It really is an exciting time for rally fans. Crazy to think we've been watching these cars test for months, but apart from the Citroen we've not really seen anything definitive in terms of the aero of these cars.

If you're talking about mainstream UK newspapers then yes this is often true. They don't talk about rallying at all.

But in this case. Everything I wrote above is a summary of direct quotes from Technical Director Francois-Xavier Demaison. So I think it's all good info. Not point VW lying about something that will eventually be revealed to everyone. They won't be able to keep the car under wraps for much longer.

Shame we learned about it the day they left. Would've been interesting to see the new bodywork, if so.

Jämsä area must be the key location for 2017 testing. Toyota, of course, shows up every other week. VW have been there three times, including the premiere of 2017 mules last August. Citroen did a week there early summer. Hyundai and Ford are still missing from the list, but I think one of them could atill show up.

The more you look at it the more you see the small but significant evolutions.

It's wider I think. Certainly if you follow the line back from the front arches it is wider and much more defined along the driver door. That will be where the impact absorbing foam goes. There was quite a big story about this in Motorsport News. Work has been done to help with side impacts.

Yep, those doors and side panels are different; still the car overall width must be the same. Besides the new wing and the new bumpers, there’s also a redesigned bonnet, suggesting a different intercooler mounting.

With all these changes and so few news about the next Polo generation release, will the 2017 WRC car still be based on the current Mk5 model?

A big emphasis was made by the FIA/Promoter when these new regs were announced about the fact that if you painted all the current cars white, the man in the street wouldn't be able to recognise one from the other.

I have to admit it's not something that particularly bothers me. I've made peace with the fact we're not going to get the variation in segments we used to have - but in 2017 with the design trends we've seen, to me they are still going to all look pretty similar to the man in the street.

I think we are attaching too much value to the aerodynamics... I don't think they are as important as we think they are. Even a formula one car can't actually generate much downforce until they reach 120 plus, and that is towards a smooth track.

Rally cars rarely reach above 150 and the number of smooth asphalt events is quite limited. Having small unsprung weight and a well sorted suspension is much more important in my eyes.

Even though the Hyundai is the least aero focused car it doesn't mean it will be slow...

The Peugeot 205 beat the competition from start without having any aero at all.

To be fair, in the beginning of the 205's victory parade it came up against bad, undriveable Audis and 2WD Lancias and Renaults, who themselves had very little aero as well. Later that changed (and the 205 still won, so I'm not trying to devalue its worth). But regarding the aero's importance, is it only on tarmac that they reach those speeds (Finland, Poland, etc jump to mind)? Also, F1 is entirely different at every possible level, so using that as a marker might be misleading IMO.

Always remember this: the problem on gravel is grip.
Grip for simple "ax" (as in bilen axar ut från kurvan bra)
Grip for braking
Grip for cornering

Whole point of aero is to increase grip. It CAN easily creat down force at average speeds around 100 km/hr..

The problem is if you make it so it increases downfrorce and thus grip at 100 km/hr then it will cost a lotta speed higher up..
Example back to the late 80s..Opel Kadett E model..Great car in the GSI model with GMs wonderful 2,0 XE 16v..
Its a clean car aerodynamically..
Put it on a flat section of motorway and it took only about 7+8hp to drive down the road at 100 km/hr...
but to run that same clean car to 210 km/hr it takes all 150 hk it makes.*
Air Resistance goes up at some cube function..

So make aero work at "average SS sped" of 100 km/hr and you better have LOTS of power or it costs ax and top speed.

Another simple example is "Big Wing" Escort Cosworth vesus no wing Escort Cosworth..
Big Wing cars went 225 km/hr top speed.
No wing cars did 246..

Todays cars are little bitty 1600cc engines...
You could say that's barely 8% smaller than old GpB 205.. but they had a 44mm restrictor...vesus a tiny little thing now...They also had turbos that look like it came off a 6 liter turbo diesel truck...
They could afford to trade some downforce at SS average speed because they had abundant power.

No sure how much excess power todays things have with limits on intake valve size, turbine and compressor wheel limited and the engine volume limited.

*these figures were straight from an old friend Ola Strömberg in Örebro who did a few events in a GpA version. He might know something, especially coming from all those years in the very aero Saabs..

Aero is inferior compared to the gains to be made elsewhere I meant, I'm sure you understood that...

Of course when you have maximized the other aspects of your current homologated package you will chase aero.

Let's be realistic, stages have been won plenty of times without rear wings, wheel arches gone etc etc...

S10 Impreza WRC had something like 100kg pressure at 100kph, that's quite a lot. Correct me if I'm wrong

Definitely possible, maybe even more. A tiny formula student car from my Alma Mater is able to produce 60 kg downforce @ 60 or 80 km/h by it's wings (I don't remember exactly) and that's something as small as a go kart and the force is growing with the speed squared.

I think we are attaching too much value to the aerodynamics... I don't think they are as important as we think they are. Even a formula one car can't actually generate much downforce until they reach 120 plus, and that is towards a smooth track.

i believe it is quite the opposite.

formula 1 cars need to be able to reach speeds of over 300km/h, so they actually cannot use really big wings.
they have long straights, and few corners, so they rarely have a lack of traction. but most importantly: without a high top speed they can't overtake.

rallying is completely different. you often don't have enough traction, but very few moments where you hit top speed. and you don't need to overtake.
so here it is much better to sacrifice some top speed to gain traction through a much bigger wing.

Going back to my example - the student formula is good to show that relatively large downforce is possible even at low speed. I was actually really surprised how much aerodynamic downforce can help on a twisty narrow track where the cars can't reach over 130 km/h and which looks nearly like a slalom between the cones. This particular car has active wings so that it can accelerate better because the max drag configuration is quite slow at straights (with opened wings this one does 0-100 @ 3,1s).

unless it is designed to cope with that.

if you expect the cars to be sideways all the time, like on gravel, you can design the wings so that it still creates downforce in that situation. that's why wings on rally cars are so different than those on circuit cars.

New front fender and extra aero on the bumper up to the wheel arch, also different wing mirrors?
Interesting they have moved away from VW's front fender design that they all copied in the last few years, may be the extra weight was not worth the aero performance?
And the rear wing is super funky with the curved rear wing dips, a way to have veins with out veins? they seem to be using F1 as inspiration with the dips in the rear wing and the front bumper winglets.

GravelBen

Maybe that design is intended to still provide some downforce when the car is going sideways and the airflow is along the wing not just across it?

That sounds very trick, would that mean a unique driving style to match?

I'd say it would still provide much more downforce in a straight line - but maybe wouldn't lose as much downforce during sideways moments as a traditional wing.

I'm no expert though! Just an amateur looking at the shape, trying to visualise airflow over it and thinking about what forces that would apply. The angled sides look like they would direct air upwards (and channel onto the main wing), giving an opposite force downwards.

For sure the suspensions failed just before the rock. It is possible the rock made that cosmetical damage on the bumper, but suspension failed before it. Maybe there was a hole (after the rock was digged) and the hole made that. We can´t see it from our perspective.

I also agree, not knowing exactly what they are testing of course makes it difficult to judge but I can't think of a good reason to go from Finland to Spain or Portugal and drive slowly. To me especially corner speed looks slow. Engine sounds good.
But as previously seen judging videos has proven difficult in the past as well..

Body shell is next gen too. It can't just be front lights and rear lights. Can't you notice the bumpers? And read side windows...

And there was also some problems with engine while Latvala was driving according what I have heard.
Also they should have been this test 2 weeks ago but also then the engine blow and they cancelled the test.

On Friday the test day was stopped for a couple of hours due to an engine work. I have no details what went wrong, but I know the engine was removed from the car. However, the test day continued for the last light hours normally. Yesterday the engine failed right after lunch break. Mikkelsen drove normally to the other end of the test road, then slower back and eventually the car was towed to service and the team packed up. Minor issue, propably, but enough to end the day.

Fiesta shares some of that issue, especially yesterday on faster road, but in general it looks more stable. My friend commented today that Fiesta is "visibly going crazy fast". He has seen all new cars several times except Hyundai, and compared Ford's speed being at level or near VW and Citroen in tests he has seen. It's just a gut feeling of course, but you can sense difference with eye and ear too.

The Hyundai team conducted a meeting this week of five days of testing on the ground. A dual purpose for the team with 2 cars: test for the next rally of Great Britain with the current self and develop its i20 WRC 2017 on land.

Monday, Thierry Neuville took place aboard his usual mount to prepare the next round of the championship on a land base of the south west of France already used by Citroën and Ford several years ago. This year, the UK is soon to leave the final round up of the season in Australia and the conditions are different. The base offers many comparable undergrowth at the British track but the mud is not present, but the humidity is not as important as what we used to see in Wales. It remains to see what comes of it on site at this time ...

The next day, rebasing for the team that installs assistance with 2 cars: the current i20 is driven by Dani Sordo and finally with 2017 WRC Thierry Neuville. After prolongs the suspense about his future, the Belgian has decided to stay with Hyundai. The team was able to finally invite him on a development session. Thierry Neuville was the few drivers of the current party platform (with Mads Ostberg) not having run in 2017 with a version testing. At the first attempt, it seems that something is not appropriate: the car is returned quickly to assistance for a small part of mechanical. Later in the morning, the Belgian will enchainer few runs. This Hyundai, like other 2017 model is powerful: it tumbles on this track like a missile. The sound that emerges its new engine pleases the ears and hunting is clearly open: it hard slap to shift! But Neuville seems to remain cautious on a fast but narrow path, raises are powerful, but braking is cautious, while the drifts restraint. Clearly it takes the driver to take its brands with this new car that is more of new generation.

On the other path, it's Dani Sordo who makes the runs on a more spectacular special. It can be seen piloting a quite different: it feels like the total control of the car and a certain ease to enroll in the trajectories. The Spanish rolls over his teammate and allows himself to be very generous in some curves. Despite a less powerful car, fun to see progress self is more important to this side. The more technical track with curves and a jump combos promotes the show. The Spanish will stop around 17h to go to the next track in spectator watching his teammate at the wheel of the car in 2017.

Wednesday, moving without assistance but by slightly adapting the plots, Dani Sordo took place aboard the car in 2017 while Hayden Paddon was preparing GB with the current i20. The Spanish know a little self, he seemed more comfortable. For two days, the team changed its base. First with Hayden Paddon who used the current car and the 2017 frame on the same route. If the morning the runs were echainés, the afternoon was much prolific run with a single. Thierry Neuville took over the wheel of the i20 WRC 2017 today. The Belgian is the only one who enjoyed 2 full days with the i20 2017. But Neuville days of running to catch up driving new cars. Hopefully this is not the first argument at the start of next season. But why would he need such arguments to explain its position? This car seems not so bad! It seems powerful and effective, hope the team could resolve recurrent problems of the current car's behavior with a new design, it could give a good fight all before 2017!

You keep getting yourself in a twist Mirek, just relax ;) . A good driver is spectacular in any car. Even R2 cars are amazing to watch with a good driver as you would agree. They will always find the limit of performance and drive the car on the ragged edge.
I have no doubt that these cars will be spectacular in the hands of some very talented people even if they may require an even smoother driving style.

One point to add maybe..
I think a big problem will be if someone has a spin and and knocks a substantial amount of aero off. They will lose a tremendous amount of time in the following stages.
We've already seen the effects on times on the current car when the rear wing has fallen off, for 2017 the time loss will be much greater.

I've absolutely loved watching all these different cars evolve at each test with small tweaks to their appearance. And there's still more to come. I really can't remember anything like this in the WRC before. Regardless of what you think of the regs it's a cool time to be a rally fan.

And remember that this cars comes in to those big jumps much faster. They will fly for sure. We are going to see some spectacular slides as well. No worries. 2017 is bringing rallying back what we lost back in time in 2011. Not to mention year 1987

Bring on Monte 2017!

c3 seems to have significant more travel than ds3.

You have to admit that the 2016 cars look a bit tame after watching the 2017 cars on test...

Have we seen any proper sized jumps like Ruuhimäki reverse in testing yet?

Of course not and that's why I wonder how it will look like on them. Still the physics is clear. The sole reason of the aerodynamic features is to push the car to the ground hence limiting the air time hence shortening the jumps. That's simple logic.

Maybe I do but while You are generally right it doesn't apply absolutely. Is Ogier in R2 spectacular? For sure he is. But is he more spectacular in WRC car? For sure he is or would You prefer to see him in R2 car instead of the WRC car? That's why the car plays a role in the spectacle. We have to wait and see but simple logic says that the new cars will slide less and will jump less because that's the only way how to use the aerodynamic features to make them faster. If not You can fire the man who designed the aero package.

But the cars that are flying with the nose in the air will revert that effect so they might fly longer ;) I'm sure you can stop it with braking mid air but will be harder to get it right i guess.

I doubt they will fly nose-up by the time of NORF but we'll see.

Wonder why the 2017 Fiesta has so much more prominent front aero than the Polo, C3 & i20 ?

Front arches remind me a bit of the Gr.B S1 ...

At the moment with their camo liveries, in gravel spec my favourite is Hyundai and in tarmac spec Fiesta...the Fiesta just looks so agressive and mean in tarmac spec!

Amen! Fair to say that with the extra power and torque allowed by a bigger restrictor, ’17 cars would be someway far more spectacular. These cars can be a revamp tool for WRC, as they surely have that ‘wow factor’ capable of attracting, again, huge crowds and common media attention to the series.

That’s why FIA must look for the safety concerns of this upgrade. A sort of super license only allowing top WRC drivers to drive the new cars and inflexible spectators control measures are much needed. FIA has to make sure, alongside rally organizers and the promoter, that ’17 reset will be the start of another epic WRC era.
