I've been today at Ogier & Ingrassia's test. I've arrived 45' before it ended, so I could only see the last eight runs. I can't say anything about them you already don't know, so I only put here some pics:

I couldn't find much difference, though I wasn't at any fast zone due to arriving late. Asking a friend who arrived earlier and was watching the car at a very fast zone, he told me that mainly its exhaust pipe sounds stronger. To me, the most important is that the car looks faster and more agressive reaching bends as well as steering out of them.
On the other hand, I posted a pair of photos by mistake. I'm not going to delete them now hoping my prestige as photographer stays undamaged:), but I post the other two here:

I can't finish these comments without saying that the last time I'd been at the end of Arcos-Portela stage was in the 90's, watching for example Colin & Sainz with Subaru and Juha and Aurioul driving their Toyota. That's really the unforgettable sound and the memories that will last a life time. Many images came into my mind being there, I could feel the past in my skin.
Well, the Group B era, I know, but I didn't live it.

Really foggy conditions during Mikkelsen's test this morning at the end of old Santa Luzia stage. He could drive only a few runs under clear view. In fact, his test was cancelled about three hours before what it was scheduled.

On the other hand, today I could spend several hours there and watch more runs than on Thursday. Yeah, the sound is that strong. The acceleration is much more exciting when it starts. It's very impressive when the car accelerates on a straightaway because you can feel it still close while it goes away.

The rear suspension layout is interesting, damper-vise looks like more or less the same as the current Polo. Initially I thought they'd go for something creative on the front as well given the layout on the C-Elysée, but I was wrong (again :D).

That concern was mainly about asphalt and some Polo testing videos support it.

I was fearing the same could happen for gravel. But yeah on asphalt the cars are closer to circuit racers now. Maybe they should change the tyre rules and/or impose minimum ride height and maximum suspension stiffness.

Maybe they should change the tyre rules and/or impose minimum ride height and maximum suspension stiffness.

Sorry but that makes no sense in the situation when they introduced advanced aero packages, wider track and active center diffs which all go hard against any sliding.

Actually I don't understand the rules at all. What is the point of having a super fast boring cars. I am also quite sure that these cars will be definitely more dangerous than current ones mainly due to a lot higher cornering speed and high dependance on the aerodynamic downforce.

Mirek
17th May 2016, 19:13
The wider track of 2017 cars shall help to achieve bigger suspension travel for all teams since the main limiting factor (as per words of VW designers) is the reliably useful angular range of the driveshaft joints.

janvanvurpa
17th May 2016, 21:26
Ever since the cars have gone to long travel suspension I have wondered repeatedly just how much travel they actually have. (since I pay the rent making among other things suspension).
Early 1990s it was around 200mm travel.. Mid 90s I have some Group A Lancia front inserts and they were 225mm...

Most of what I make is 200-210mm...

Clearly the really long arms and the gentler arc they make allows the CVs to be less stressed but I really still cannot find any real published number for the travel...

Does anybody really know?

And Latvala breaking things... Well some people just break things..
I had a friend who did the same events I did in '77 and 79 doing International moto-cross mostly in France but also Suisse and Belgie and he was just a bit faster and just a bit heavier but same bikes and same wheels...and same suspension--about 310mm back, 300mm front..and he broke or collapsed wheels frequently, while I would do a check occasionally but could do 2 seasons without any worries or thoughts.. KTM and Husqvarna had good wheels,..
But he's break them..

Focus WRC -06 had 280mm travel rear and 300mm front(with rough rally option +20mm)travel. This is damper travel not wheel travel.Current WRC Fiesta is very close though I don`t know exact figures, R5 Fiesta has slightly less travel than WRC.
New C3 has dampers situated like VW, Skoda and Ford next to driveshafts not on top which allows more travel. As has TMR Toyota(TMG Toyota had as Hyundai and DS3)

Do we know exact regulations? Not saying it's the case but it would be interesting to know if they can use electric turbo to completely avoid ALS.

2017 regulations say the following:

The turbocharger must be single turbocharger, with single stage compression and expansion, and must not have variable pitch or variable geometry.

I guess the electric turbo count as a second turbo, so not allowed.

Mirek
21st May 2016, 13:03
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that the electric turbos used in the F1 or Le Mans are actually normal exhaust-driven turbos where only the initial rotation is made by the electric motor to remove the lag, i.e. it's only a kind of electric ALS. Do I undertsand it right?

Yeah you are. It is a motor generation unit (called MGU) that can be used both for PTO and PTI). It is used a bit complexely like spooling up turbo and it is rumored that it is also used in overtake situations to boost the turbo further... Not sure whether this is true or not though

itix

makinen_fan
21st May 2016, 14:01
TBH I was not familiar with technology around e-turbos. After looking it up it seems you are indeed right. The electric motor turns the turbo when you fo from off to on throttle. It would be interesting to know the power consumption of such an electric motor, I dont believe they can be driven from normal battery. They seem to store energy in a super-capacitor when you go off throttle, i.e. doing partly the work of a wastegate. For WRC max voltage allowed is 16v.

On another note, only a list of FIA approved turbos are allowed, all from Garrett.

See your PM

There can always be more than I think and say. Anyway such landing is a sign for something wrong on aerodynamics (and/or probably balance as Per said), or could be just a driver error.

Meeke continued today, so Breen's turn is tomorrow.

Difficult conditions today. Some rain, heavy winds and cold temperatures, +5 celcius (#FinnishSummer). My friend was spectating the tests and noted the car didn't handle stable at all times, especially rear end tended to get loose. Neveheless, it's fast and mean beast of a rally car. Until midday break, there were no interuptions. Yesterday afternoon the car was towed back to service twice after some small issues.

Looking at that video made me think about aerodynamics a bit. You know how VW have that huge front splitter? Notice Citroen doesn't but on the jumps the front hangs in the air a lot, regardless of the jump angle. That's a pretty clear aero imbalance to me and it seems this is what the big VW splitter solves.

Mirek
11th June 2016, 14:26
IMO it may be dangerous to set the aerodynamic balance in such a way that it depends on the front spoiler because I expect it to be often broken in the real events.

everything you can write at an open forum mate.
How was at right bucket with Paddon?

Ok.
Hayden asked me quite early after we started working together if I wanted to come to a test. I declined, because I said it was very important that we get the basic theory down first, and really work on that (which still is a work in progress, and will be for some time, even tough Hayden takes things in a lot faster than I expected.) I knew from previous experiences that it can be (understandably) difficult for a driver to take new things in, in regards to driving technique, on a test, because even tough its a test its still a high stress environment. And there are also different aspects on a test, because this is often the first time you meet the team, with mechanics, engineers, codriver etc, and that can also be a "risk" if it doesn't work out, and can be a strain to he future working partnership. And I also dont wont to be present at a test if I feel I am not making a contribution, then I would just feel in the way.

I met Hayden and John in the airport in Warsaw, and we drove a Hyundai i20 together down to the test area. This was the first time Hayden and me met in person, so that was nice. And it was also nice to meet John. They are very nice persons both of them, but you already knew that.
From a rally fans perspective, when you come to a hotel in the middle of nowhere where a lot of cars from the same brand are parked outside, your heart starts racing a bit because you know its something special going on. We arrived in the hotel quite late in the evening. So it was all about getting the key and going to sleep.

Morning after it was breakfast. Here I met Rui for the first time (Rui Francisco Soares.) He is Haydens trusted race engineer, and has been for many years. Rally is a team sport, and for Hayden Hyundai is off course the team. Here you have prob about 200 people all working in one form or another to win WRC rallies. Within a team, there is what I call the "micro team". This is often the driver, codriver and engineer, but can be a few more people depending on the driver and how he works. For me coming from the outside its off course very important to get along with the micro team, and you never know how open the race engineer is to accepting new people, new ideas etc.
Rui is a very nice guy, and I felt (hope he feels the same) that we got along really well. He welcomed me in to the team - and thats always a good way to start. In some instances my work can be a link between the engineer and the driver, and I felt that really went very well. (And again, I hope Hayden and Rui felt the same.)

Outside of the micro team you have the main team. And meeting the Hyundai team (test team) for the first time was also very interesting.
When you come to a place in the middle of nowhere in some countryside, and there is parked two big trucks, and there is a lot of persons all working very intensely on a rally car, and with all the crowds and things from a WRC rally taken away, its easy to throw the parallel to the military. It could just as well have been some special forces detail, with the driver and codriver being the sharp end. The logistics are very similar, and you get a sense of both urgency and serious intent.
Both the engineers and mechanics had some good "war stories" to tell from a long life in motorsport. Especially the engine engineer had worked on a lot of interesting projects up trough the years.

When the test starts, its all planned out very meticulously. Drivers work differently. Some drivers drive, then give feedback, and let the engineer(s) do the thinking. Hayden is very involved, so together with Rui he has a very detailed plan for the test (most detailed I have seen.) First day was Wednesday, and the test started at 8 o´clock. And every run was planned in regards to set up changes (the set up part I off course can not go in to). It was raining, and because of the sunny forecast I hadn't brought any rain gear, but it was something in Haydens driving I wanted to see from the outside, so I found a very good spot for it in the wet. This worked out very good. On the way back I wanted to see the same corner from behind, and knew there was a chance he maybe could throw some gravel in my direction. Well, lets say I underestimated that a little bit. I got completely covered in sandy, wet mud. But it was important, so it was worth it.

After some runs, first with John, and then Rui in the passenger seat, Hayden asked if I wanted to come. I had "warned" Hayden that it might be difficult for me to give any good feedback from the passenger seat because of the speed, and all the things that are happening. We took one run to acclimatise (he off course tested some changes on that run to), and then I was going to try to give some feedback. I had planed this a little beforehand, deciding on some simple words to use on corner entry and exit, and with some short comments on the straights. This actually worked very good, and what is most impressive is that Hayden is able to take it in and do changes on the trot. He has impressed me hugely in this respect all from the very beginning, but still does.

In regards to being passenger in a WRC car, its off course completely ridiculous.
The acceleration is very good, but the braking on gravel is such that your eyes feel like they are going to pop out of their sockets, your limbs are thrown forward, and you really feel the strain in your neck when you try to keep your helmet covered brain box from detaching from the rest of your carcass.
Compared to a "normal" rally car everything happens so much faster. So as soon as you have braked, the car is hurled around in an impossible rotation angle, and you are seeing the world from out the side window while you try to get to grips with what is keeping the car attached to the loose gravel road in that impossible speed. The grip is just unbelievable.
After the acclimatisation run, then the analytical part of the brain takes over, and you got to get in the "zone" or "flow" to be able to think fast enough to give any decent comments. For me - and I think its the same for many motorsport drivers and codrivers - it feels like the whole world is slowing down.
If it hadnt been like that, I think it would have been very difficult to have time to give any useful input. All tough its also on my part always room for improvement, this means we have another tool in our tool box in regards to moving forward towards Haydens world championship.

It was a two day test where both driver, codriver, engineers and mechanics all play their role. And its all about grinding away towards future goals. Hayden has - how should we put this - quite a decent work ethic. Wednesday the driving/testing started at 08.00. It went on all the way to 18.00 (thats when the road was opened for traffic), with just a short lunch brake. Then debrief and dinner on site. (A very nice Spanish guy that stood for the catering, he also had a long history in motorsports.) Back to the hotel. I was handed some onboards for analysing. Hayden went for a run. We met at 22.00 in the lounge to go trough the plan for the day after in regards to driving. This lasted to about 24.00. And then it was on it again the day after.
For me it was a very good experience, because I felt it clicked well with both the micro team and the general team, and that I was able to make some real contributions to Hayden (which is off course the most important things). Just what we are working on I am not going to disclose, but both Rui, Hayden and me worked together to get there, and when we were done (all tough you are off course never done) the adjustments was also very visible on the data, which for me is off course a good proof of concept. So all in all a very positive experience, I hope I get to repeat many times in the coming years.

On a side note: What is important for rally talents that are trying to make their way up the ranks to know, is that it isn't mainly the driving on a rally these guys get paid for, but the immense work they put in in between.
Ogier didn't just land on the top of the podium by chance, he worked very hard to get there, and the same is true with Hayden.

its looking much better since the early days

however, when i watch the citroen and vw vids...something just seems a little different about the toyota

but, time will tell next year when the timing clocks switch on

i wish them good luck with the project...the more competition, the better (hopefully they can manage to attract one competitive/decent driver, though this seems unlikely given the current situation)

Reading this (http://wrcbehindthestages.blogspot.fi/2011/05/chapter-15-differential-extravaganza.html) again it looks like there’s a lot to test with the active centre differential also.

“We experimented with lots of different options, during rallies mostly, as tests were too short to do any real work on it.”

“When I approached the apex of the corner, I came on throttle and I needed a smooth transition from brake mode to acceleration mode, which did not upset the car, but applied strong pressure on the front diff to help pull the car into the apex, a relatively strong and specific pressure on the center diff to keep the car neutral, a smooth rising pressure on the rear diff for traction but not too much so as to prevent excessive oversteer. All that depended on the speed of the corner.”

What kind of mechanical construction (open differential, planetary differential) did the centre differential have in the past?

Oh OK this I know something of..
You understand how normal multi-plate LSD works right?
Half the clutch plates are splined to the case, the other half are spline to side gears In center diff half spline to input shaft, half to output shaft,,

Then in normal LSD there is some kind of spring, sometimes a series of small coil springs (think of any motorcycle clutch) but often a cupped saucer like spring called "Belleville Spring" or Belleville washer. This pushed plates and disc together making the two sets "locked" together and establishing diff "pre-load"..or "break-away torque" .that is how much torque needed to begin to allow the plates to slip some.....

In active diffs there was again discs and plates like we are used to in our own rally diff but instead of a spring to force them together there is hydraulic force or I think somebody even truied compressed air a million years ago..
The hydraulic force is of course able to be regulated as so the diff can go from zero pressure--able be "open" (input shaft turning at whatever speed and output shaft not turning at all) progressively all the way to complete 100% lock up (input shaft and output shaft turning exactly the same speed)
And of course it is a bunch of wheel sensors---like ABS sensors---counting rotation on all the wheels and probably input and output shaft rotation---and this goes to a computer that has a program or "map" done by some guy who certainly never ever sat in a rally car but is a genius engineer, and this decides how to lock up--progressively--or unlock (open on decel into corner).

Very expensive and incredibly costly and arbitrary to amass the foundational information to allow the "injur-near" to decide the MAP---(or said another more cynical way, to allow the injur-near enough information to decide what he belives the driver should like)..
If it was good, it worked. If it was not good--well maybe you read the blog from Warmbold from this very forum when he talked about driving all the way to Poland and then car was undrivable and after paying so much for prep and confusion it tuirns out that somebody had simply forgotten to LOAD a diff map..
Oh well sh1t happens.

Whn "active" diffs were not allowed or simply too insanely expensive work was don on the ramp angles of the pressure rings inside the normal cluth plate diff and this allowed different rates of lock up and lock up on drive direction and open or near open on coast/decel something like this:
http://www.slidewaysonline.com/images/LSDResearch/accel%20lock.jpg
Or like this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads19/+B9IjBO+EWk+KGrHqEOKp+Ey+jC0RYFBM47+7m1m+_12129192 78601321839025.jpg

This works anywhere so this is what EVERYBODY has been using since active diffs were WISELY banned

great to see Tänak wearing his winning helmet from rally Estonia 2014 :)

Maybe this is why he has that helmet on again:

"Tänak to appear on ERC Rally Estonia city stage

Top Estonian rally ace Ott Tänak will make an appearance on the FIA European Rally Championship’s auto24 Rally Estonia this weekend – driving a crosskart on the Elva street stage.

Tänak, who won the event on its ERC debut in 2014 and recently came close to a world championship victory on Rally Poland, will be joined by the 2013 event winner Georg Gross in getting behind the wheel of the spectacular crosskarts on Saturday evening.

The pair will take on the spectator-friendly course 10 minutes before the first of the ERC contenders."

Actually, they have been working on moving the gearbox paddle from Fiesta to Clio for a few months. So it's more that they wanted it there, not that they had to. They had to get an approval from Italian Motorsport Federation (I don't know the name) to participate though.

Hi
So it would seem the 2017 VW and C3 jump with the front lifting up, is this to get the back on the ground as fast as possible for more traction? or fale safe so it does not land front first? Just the jumps we are seeing? or some else?
Cheers
Andrew

Good question! Seb Marshall hinted/suggested on a recent Absolute Rally podcast interview that it's the aero set-up that is causing this. Notice how the Toyota doesn't seem to do that too much and supposedly neither does the Hyundai. Wether or not this is deliberate is a bit unknown.

It's aero balance problem, not intentional. You have massive rear wing and diffuser creating a lot of downforce and in the front you only have front spoiler.

This is pitot tube, isnt' it? Like in F1, it measures fluid flow velocity.
