Last Friday, Eric Camilli got his first chance to familiarise himself with his new team - M-Sport - and with the Ford Fiesta RS WRC during a test ahead of the 2016 Rallye Monte-Carlo. It marked the start of a new life for the French youngster who already feels at home with the British outfit.
It was at 1:35pm, Friday, that Eric Camilli and his new co-driver Nicolas Klinger reversed their Fiesta RS WRC out of M-Sport’s service area near Laborel, in France’s Drôme Mountains.
Their first run in the car at speed was up to the famous Col du Perty and Eric showed that he has a good grasp of how to start a World Rally Car thanks to some 2,000km of testing in the Toyota Yaris WRC.
Eric and Nicolas had arrived mid-Friday morning when they got to meet M-Sport engineers Mark, Anthony and Bernardo, the team’s mechanics and their new team-mate Mads Ostberg who had started his test the previous day. The Norwegian had been forced to find a last-minute replacement for his usual co-driver Jonas Andersson, so Emil Axelsson stepped in for the first day and Ilka Minor was brought in to sit alongside on the Friday.
During the lunch break, the new French duo took time to adjust their seats and belts and also acquaint themselves with the Fiesta RS WRC’s cockpit which they will share for the next two years.
The weather was clear, but the bumpy, five-kilometre climb to the Col du Perty and back – a run that WRC regulars know well - was damp in places, with some ‘black-top’ portions and a few frosty corners.
After two return trips, they drove back to the base where they were awaited by onlookers and M-Sport staff who still seemed a little circumspect about the latest signing of their boss Malcolm Wilson.
“Everything’s okay,” smiled Eric. “It’s a good test stage. The car rides the bumps well. I feel confident.”
“We immediately hit it off with the pace notes,” noted Nicolas. “Eric called me last week but it wasn’t easy for me to say ‘yes’ to his offer because Benjamin [Veillas, Eric’s former co-driver] is my best friend and Julien Maurin [Nicolas’s former driver] is a good friend, too. But this is too good an opportunity to miss.”
After two further passes, there was a visible shift in the atmosphere in the engineers’ motorhome and Eric’s early times cleared any lingering doubts about his recruitment. Next on the programme was a switch to the new Michelin Pilot Sport S5 tyres which the team will have available for the Rallye Monte-Carlo.
On Friday evening, after moving to a new base in the Ardèche Mountains, Eric and Nicolas seemed more relaxed. “I felt a little stressed this morning. I’ll sleep better tonight,” admitted Eric after a good meal at the Hôtel des Cévennes.
Testing continued on the Saturday in Mezilhac where hundreds of spectators turned up to watch the action. Eric completed 279km on the fast, damp test stage at an average speed of 110kph, with work stopping at 6:30pm after he had evaluated a variety of set-ups and tyres.
The last part of the test took place after nightfall when fog was an additional difficulty but Eric didn’t put a foot wrong. After the debrief meeting with his engineers, it was obvious that M-Sport’s new Frenchie had been adopted by the team…

Camilli looks uncomfortable in the car? Maybe seating position, but he looks on edge and not relaxed? Having never seen any onboard from him I don't know if that's what he is like (ie Gilles Panizzi like). I would also suggest his cornering speed looked on the limit, but there was an awful lot of rubber down and you would assume he has driven that road a bunch of times by that point, so not really indicative of his pace?

I'm pretty sure you can set the height of your seat according to your preference as a driver. Latvala for example stays very high, Ostberg stay lower. It's a matter of how do you want to watch the road and use car parts on your view as reference points to take turns.
Hope it's clear, not the best english to explain this concept. Forgive me for that. :)

Some of the test and fan videos posted to this site portray rallying in a much, much better way in terms of understanding just how quick the cars/drivers are, in comparison to the TV coverage.
Closer to actually being there by a long way.

I agree, Camilli seemed at home in the WRC.
VW - business as usual.
Hyundai - hard to say, SWE test looked good. I think how interesting this season is depends on how close their new car is to VW.
Lundefaret and others as well, want to risk some prediction about Neuville, Camilli and Paddon? Here's mine:
Neuville: if the new car is fast he will regain confidence, stop overdriving and fight with the VWs, if not then more crashes
Camilli: will steadily improve from low part of top 10 to middle, maybe get close to the podium a few times
Paddon: will continue like last year and will have better results on rallies he knows. will be interesting to see how he (and also Camilli) does in China

It has been very interesting to follow Hyundais development of their new WRC-car.
It has steadily looked better and better, and is now resembling a quick rally car on most surfaces.
But I have seen some things that I am a little bit unsure about, and I wonder if any one else on this forum has paid special attention to some details, or have any likes/dislikes when it comes to the handling of the new i20?
I will "disclose" my "findings" later, but I want others to come with views unaffected by mine. Any one up for it?

Frankly I haven't noticed anything, or more exactly I can't tell how fast the car is from looking. But I would follow the discussion with interest.
EDIT: only thing i did notice is the i20 body seems the "jump" and move more compared to the Polo. Harder suspension? Or maybe that's just the road characteristic.

So you start to tease now? :) Very difficult for me to judge a car in some testing videos, there are many variables. I'm not an expert but I guess they test the car in all possible ways, including bad setups, wrong tyres, different driving styles and so on. So one can misunderstand how it performs. Let's see what you have found out.
And don't forget your lists. Lately you didn't use them too much. Very bad. ;)

I noticed a bit more understeering in slow/medium fast corners, especially on tarmac. And not just with the factory drivers, also with the first i20 WRC private driver in the world-Corrado Fontana.

Same here, quite a bit of understeering and to get the car turn very much sideways around the corners. Looks nice but clock does not like it, also risk of hitting something along the road is higher.

To me, overall it isn't nearly as "smooth" as the Polo. Understeering (not much, but still) in the middle of the corner, the rear suspension seems to lack a bit of grip as well.

Acceleration looks good.
Turn/section 21 and 27: It looks like he is throwing a car a bit sideways, but then he starts accelerating quite early so that is good, I guess you can call it nosendfirst'ish? :)
Long right hander, again he puts it sideways and early on throttle. Maybe car is set up to be more "tail happy" and use snowbanks to keep rear end on the road?

Generally I quite like what I see, looks pretty fast, at least it looks that way for my inexperienced eyes.
Let us know what you think Lundefaret.
Okay, here is what I think - and I am open for input.
What I will say is that - tough I dont completely agree with RallyPer about the "analysing is worthless" bit, its difficult to know about stuff like grip level etc, since I neither was present at the test, nor have any other cars to compare with.
0.10:
Very little squat/weight transfer in acceleration.
This could have several reasons, for example:
- Low grip
- Stiff sett up longitudinally compared to grip level
- Strategy (like wanting the car to pull more from the front, testing it with stiffer set up etc)
For me this is maybe there could have been more weight transfer to get more grip.
0.21:
Very little yaw.
This continues my observation in regards to the car being quite stiff in set up.
The front dips very little.
The VW has a very nice movement where it really lowers down on all four wheels - if You want it to.
The left hand corner is taken with a good amount of speed. But there is maybe to much oversteer on the exit. This is especially bad since the next straighter section starts with an uphill, so there is really no acceleration until just a few meters before the next right hander.
And then the car is placed to the right, so not an optimal position for the best acceleration.
A driver like Ogier would have gotten a little more acceleration out of the left hander, just to win a couple of metres, maybe five, on the opponents.
0.27:
Turn in maybe a little to early, so that full acceleration have to wait a little to long?
Acceleration looks OK, but this is difficult to judge whit out a comparison, but it looks like a very good pull from the front.
Still very little body movement longditudally, which either means a stiff set up or low grip, or a combination.
0.35:
Long right hander.
- 0.36: Coming in to the frame with an accelerating rotation angle.
- 0.37: The car has quit a big rotation angle with all wheels pointing in one direction.
- 0.37,5: The steering wheels start pointing in to the turn.
The rest of the corner is driven with this kind of understeer. And this is very fast, and should be a result of a driver with both high confidence in the car, and grip level.
(Or else its just madness:))
0.41:
Snow bank steering.
Comes in to the frame with a very accelerating rotation angle.
Hits the snow bank with the rear, which stops the rotating, and straightens the car for a clean acceleration.
This is a high risk move:
- Snow banks can have different densities.
- The hit in the rear could force a counter reaction in the front, leading the front to be pushed out hard and fast.
But as long as You have these two issues covered, this is a very fast way to end the turn before acceleration.
Summary:
- The car looks to be surprisingly stiff in set up.
- Paddon tends to drive very long with much oversteer when he is under certain grip levels, as we saw in the Monte test with studs on asphalt. He should work on developing some tools to counter this - when its needed.

That looks like it could be in that range....and if that is the case it really is a huge increase--for both surfaces. Mid 90s Group A Subaru and Fords were right at 155mm total shaft travel (I have bought ex Boreham and Prodrive Bilstein inserts) and gravel fronts was around 190-200mm.
I may personally be only interested in gravel, but I watch and study---and scratch my head---asfalto rally and it has seemed that tthe cars a LOT more travel than previously --on tarmac I'm saying and that they work much better than previously...
I wonder if they use different uprights and subframes (like in the Good Ol' days of Group A)?
Do you know if Manufacturers must still submit detailed Homologation papers as before?
I haven't really looked over anything since the Whirled Rally Car Escort Cosworth.

Si si, claro..The big hint I noticed was the jack stands plugged into the jacking points and the gap between the tires and the ground...usually that's a hint the car is not being driven..:uhoh:
oddly enough I just spent a couple of hours under a car in the very same configuration--a Ford (but an old Sierra)---yesterday and as soon as my little girls are off to school I crawl back under (I forgot to take loose the turbo oil drain--it was getting dark..Pobre mio!:bigcry:)
EDIT, except now its raining and its +4 and I don't get paid like WRC mechanics so I go make metal into rally parts today.

You mean different uprights and subframes for asphalt and gravel? That's not allowed. In fact they are obliged to have same even for front and rear.

For me it again (like Paddon in Sweden) looks like its a little bit stiffly sprung compared to the VW. Its off course difficult to say if its the springs/dampers etc. But where the VW is benign, sucking up bumps, the Hyundai hops and darts.
It looks good on initial turn in - much better than the 15. But mid corner, or in corner where You have an actual direction change, it still looks like it has understeering tendencies. This doesn't have to be a bad thing.
It looks faster than the 15 - but this is very difficult to judge - but it does not look like a revolution.
For me the car seems at its best when there is around 70-80% grip. Then it looks drivable, and benign. More grip and the pointing, darting jumping starts. Less grip, and its sliding everywhere.
But since we have not seen it compared to the other WRC cars, its very difficult, and it can be results of set up, grip levels, strategy, etc etc.
It will be very exiting to follow. I really hope this is a tool to challenge VW, it would be great for the championship!

same impressions as me.Lifts front wheel at small bumps, suspension seems too stiff, and understeer at tight corner entry which drives to oversteer at exits of tight corners.Same disadvantages of the old model.
But as you said we dont know if is the final setup,or if it was a compromise setup for smoother stages etc.

Cant say that I agree with those statements. Kubica on tests are too often to fast with to high risk, resulting in a too narrow set up, and also to aggressive driving on the rally proper, leading to multiple offs - even on one and the same rally. Kubica needs to learn three things to become a very good rally driver, but so far its just more of the same. Very impressive speed, extremely high risk.
On Camilli: Testing different set ups and different lines/driving techniques is how You should do a test. You should also drive at about 80% (thats the race pace), and do the set up accordingly. Then You should have a couple of finishing runs at 100% attack, just to see that nothing acts funny, bottoms out etc. This is from "The School Of Mäkinen."

Man, Sordo seems really fast on that testing vid but the car seems to be quite nervous and tail happy for me but then again im not a specialist.
It seems like a result of several compromises, something that leads me to think that either the geometry or the roll centre or a combination is a little bit on the extreme side. But it can be other things to.
As dimviii points out the car is actually a little understeered, thats why You have these tail slides on the exit, and it can seem oversteered (tough the opposite is true). To conquer the understeer its quite aggressive on initial turn in, and thats probably why it seems nervous.
When it comes to this understeering bit this dont need to be a bad thing, but You have to be able to drive it correctly. If Your tail always slides out on the exit, thats a sign that You are not.
Lundefaret
12th January 2016, 23:02
you heard me,but you write for multiple offs at one rally.
Yes.
When Kubica tests, especially on test stages he knows well, he drives too fast and with to high risk. One thing is that this leads to small or larger errors on the test. But this also leads to problems in set up, because of the load he will generate trough the suspension and tires is much higher than he is able to on the proper rally - because there he doesn't know the stages that well. And this also says a lot off his point of perspective in regards to driving fast. He uses circuit racing techniques when You can drive 110%, because if You go 10% wider, are 10% to late on the brakes, take a corner 10% to early, You have room to straighten it out whit out crashing, but just loosing a little bit of time.
Kubica is a great driver, no doubt about it, but he needs to understand rally to be good at it. And by being good at it I dont mean setting some good stage times, and then crash on the next, but deliver good race results.
Kubica is almost a little irritating, because he is such a good driver, and he would use so little time to crack the code if he was coached correctly. I hope that he could meet someone, or have a personal epiphany that leads him on the right path.

Yep, it will look different every time he tries a new set up, but overall he may have a bit more aggressive driving style than the other frenchies. Unlike Loeb and Ogier, Camilli has serious karting roots, with some top level results ( http://www.rallye-sport.fr/eric-camilli-futur-grand/ )

The differences between Mads and Camilli in some places are huge.
I fear Evans could be faster than Camilli with an R5 in Monte. But is ok, the most important thing for Camilli is the difference between his performances from now to November. If there will be enough improvement and more space for learning the next year he could be confirmed.
I fear it will be very tough for him on first few events btw.

I think You are right.
Camilla is very inexperienced, but undoubtedly a big talent.
In the start of the season he will both impress, with dome very good stage times, and depress, with offs and very uneven stage times.
But I won't surprise if he ends the season bathing Mads on gravel, and being faster on tarmac.
In 2017 (if Camilli is still at M-Sport), I think Mads will have to work very hard to keep Camilli behind him.

I think the car looks better here. It is not so nervous with the back end and the suspension looks more tuned for this smoother road.
Yeah, that looks better to me as well. I'm more optimistic that we will have an interesting fight this season.

Looks much better. The first set up actually looks like Neuvilles set up when he struggles with understeering. He some times ends up whit a tail happy, quick turn in car.

The suspension of the VW is just incredible. But via, via I heard the cost of ONE corner, and the was just astronomical, and enough to by a pretty good 4wd rally car.
