View Full Version : Tv Sound Reception Of Wsbk And Motogp Races

19th February 2008, 11:14
I watched some speedway on Sky TV last year and was amazed and delighted at the sound of the bikes through my surround sound system and I could still hear the commentators clearly - was one of them Jonathon Green? I got to wondering why it is that Superbike and Motogp races mostly sound like a swarm of bees and on some occasions barely audible which kind of spoils the enjoyment. Do others experience the same problem or it is some technical issue with reception in NZ.

The sound of the bikes on tv never does them justice. I don't like the sound of the two strokes at the track though, they sound more like a swarm of angry mosquitos. BBBBBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzz

The smell is the best part! Following a 2-banger on the road tho will send you delirious.

I like the 2-stroke sound for something different but the variation of sounds of the new diesels is really far more interesting.

The smell and the noise is the best part of it all..well maybe after the actual racing that is..

Actually as long as the two strokes engine is fit, it produce melodious noise, but once the rubbish two strokes stopped in front of us at traffic light, it smokes, sounds and smells worse than locomotive gas.

I find the sound to be disappointing on the Foxtel feed we get here, and I'm running it through a Denon amp to Wharfedale speakers. It certainly doesn't compare to watching 'Faster'; of course a DVD has had a lot of post-action engineering of the soundtrack, but I've worked in sound reinforcement both in studios and live, and IMO you can actually get a better sound live if you work at it and know your stuff.

Perhaps the digital sound is compressed a lot to allow a stronger image feed off the satellite, but that's a realm I have no understanding of.

Haven't seen enough speedway to know if Jonathan Green commentates for them!
Also, in speedway there's much more opportunity for good mic placement - you can get the hardware to within metres of the action - whereas out on a 3-5km circuit you're pretty much limited to where the cameras are placed, and a lot of them are a fair way from the actual racetrack.
